Join us for Day 4 in learning about Catholic Funerals.
Today we’ll explore the topic of can Catholics Choose Cremation?
One of the most common questions Catholic families ask when planning a funeral is whether cremation is permitted by the Catholic Church. The answer is yes.
While the Church has traditionally preferred burial as a reflection of Christ’s own burial and resurrection, cremation has been permitted for many years and is now a common choice for Catholic families. What remains most important is that the deceased is treated with dignity and respect, and that their life is honoured through prayer, remembrance, and faith.
The Catholic Church teaches that cremation should not diminish belief in the resurrection of the body. Families are encouraged to approach cremation with the same reverence and care that would be given to a traditional burial.
Following cremation, the ashes should be kept together and laid to rest in a sacred place, such as a cemetery, mausoleum, columbarium, or memorial garden. This provides a place where family and friends can gather, pray, and remember their loved one for generations to come.
Whether you choose burial or cremation, a Catholic funeral service can still include many of the meaningful traditions of the faith, including funeral prayers, a Requiem Mass, blessings, scripture readings, and committal ceremonies.
For many families, understanding these options can bring comfort and clarity during what is often a difficult time.
Every family’s wishes, traditions, and faith journey are unique.
